Introduction:
What is WordPress?
WordPress started out in 2003 as a way of making it easier to add content to websites without needing to know any code. Since then it’s grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging system and website builder in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.
WordPress is open source software which means it can be freely used, changed and shared in an unmodified or modified form by anyone. Although WordPress started out as a blogging system, it’s now evolved into a powerful content management system that you can add plugins, themes and widgets to that allow you to do almost anything you want with it, for example a business website, an online store or membership site.
However, there is something that confuses many newcomers to WordPress. There two different types of WordPress. The first you can find at wordpress.com these sites are hosted by WordPress, they have many features available, they are very easy to use and you can set up your website in minutes. But you must follow the terms and conditions set down by wordpress.com.
In this training we are referring to the second option. With this option you download a copy of WordPress from wordpress.com and upload it to a domain and hosting that you own, and more importantly, control yourself.
When running your own business it’s importantly to have as much of that business as possible under your own control. That way you are not at the mercy of someone else changing the rules and shutting your business down.
As we have said, over the years WordPress has gradually grown as more functionality has been added culminating in the latest update, WordPress 5.0.
This latest update is arguably the biggest and most significant update so far. This training takes you through all of those changes so that you can hit the ground running with your new WordPress 5.0 site.
